JERSEY FRESH MARKET INFO Seaport guidelines for the farmer’s market Farmer’s Market Vendor Registration Farmer’s Market Non-Profit Registration Farmer’s Market Concern Form AUGUST 2010 MEETING SUMMARY FARMERS MARKET:
June Sullivan commented that the two growers and the baker have been very pleased with the progress of the NJ Fresh Farmers Market. Business has been steady and there has been signage put into place. They set up early and the public feedback has been very good, everyone is pleased. Tim stated that Rene’ from the Tuckerton Seaport found signs and put them out. Liz sent June an e-mail for a link to send her feedback regarding the market to the Agriculture department and that June should let them know she is contact person. CONCERTS: Liz Moritz stated they are well attended, and the public seems to be enjoying themselves. Everyone seems to be staying to the end and enjoying the evening. “Jericho Road” is the next scheduled concert this Friday night.
NJ SCENIC BY- WAY: Liz Moritz spoke about this approved program, where each county designates a specific roadway, and in Tuckerton one will be of a historical nature. The by- way has been recognized, we have received a grant, and the state has hired a graphic designer to prepare a logo. Liz asked if anyone on the committee would like to take part of this program. It is important for EDC to participate as there are grant opportunities offered. Liz stated we filled out a logo questionnaire, as the commission was looking for natural pictures to use and Liz submitted several ideas. We were trying to come up with something unique that could also be used in accordance with the Pinelands Commission, Great Egg Harbor Wild and Scenic Society, Batsto Village & Tuckerton Seaport. The final result was a pine tree and water. Liz suggested an Old Indian canoe. There was a lot of discussion on detail. The approved sign measures 3 x 4, with the top portion to designate NJ Scenic By-Way: the center part is our specific Pine Barren Logo: the tree, canoe and water, below that will be a direction sign with the bottom portion: “loop” or “Spur” showing a shopping area. If we get national recognition, it would be mentioned underneath. Liz described the sign color back ground is brown/black similar to the parks, and other colors will be based on a specific color palate the commission is working on presently. The circulation plan has been brought up to the Borough Council, they will put this on their web site. Liz stated her goal is to eliminate a lot of the sign clutter. Mr. Jim Mosley attended tonight’s meeting, he is interested in joining the EDC. Mr. Mosley asked what is expected from their members. He is concerned with hours interfering with his job at the OC Board of Social Services. Liz stated we are looking for good ideas to promote local commerce. Examples of similar ideas, would be the Millville arts program which June had brought to our attention, and distributed brochures explaining that venue. The town has a Friday night arts /culture event to encourage public to visit and participate. Liz would like to include this scenic by- way as an idea to promote interest in Tuckerton.
Liz will ask Barbara Layton, web master for the Borough to include the mapping of the scenic by way program on our EDC web site. Liz stated we are looking to promote expansion of businesses. Tim suggested night of shopping, where merchants are open later one evening a week and the town would offer entertainment. Bringing in businesses in a poor economy has been a challenge. One problem is that rents may be too high for some opportunists. Another concern are some shops on the East Main street alley has been showing signs of dilapidation/ poorly kept, and often have too many vacancies. Liz would like to investigate if there is a program/grant to help assist with developing encouragement of enticing businesses, such as small boutiques to open in town. Liz suggested a focus on the September meeting agenda: invite local merchants to discuss ideas for a kick-off of December seasonal shopping, holiday parking, Circulation Plan, promoting business, clean up of “eye-sore” areas, and to compile a brochure in advance, for distribution in October. Tim Hart implied forwarding this brochure to Barbara Steele at the OC Dept. of Tourism. June stated to send a letter to the president of the Pinelands Business Association President, with the invitation. Liz would like to contact the person/developer for the potential Shop Rite who attended our July meeting and present this information to him on the regarding Scenic By- Way. Liz asked Jim if he would like to join the group. Jim stated he would like to join, and asked what is expected of him. Jim expressed his desire to “clean-up” undesirable areas that may deter visitors. Members discussed contacting officials concerning common unhealthy areas such as “high grass” or excessive debris, etc. Tim Hart suggested we should send this letter as a group expressing our concern. On behalf of EDC members requested to send correspondence to the Mayor requesting the status on the property located on Water Street: it is an “eyesore” to the community—a garage/boat building area with a---high cyclone fence It has potential for a “Danger-Safety zone” and members want to inform council that EDC is working on a plan as an initial step to clean up this type of existing property using the tool of our new” property maintenance code”. This one instance on Water street—where pathways need to be cleared, is EDC’s general observation and the reason behind our project is to attract business to town. Liz suggested that Jim Mosley send an e-mail to the Mayor requesting he join EDC so he may be appointed sworn in.
